Starting a Trucking Company

Starting your own trucking company can be complicated, but the rewards are great. The process takes a little time and patience. 1. The first thing you will need to do is decide on the type of legal entity you want to be. A Corporation, an LLC, a DBA or just operate in your own name.
2. What name will you call your trucking company?

6. Do you have the start up cost to get this enterprise going?
7. Do you have the time and experience to complete the registration and permitting process?

Once you have your trucking company name decided, you need to get it registered in your state of residence. This can be done in as little as one day in some states to several weeks in others. You need to get your Federal ID Number for your company. This is an absolute requirement. You should not use your social security number as your Federal ID number unless you are willing to accept the risk of identity theft.

The next step is to obtain your FMCSA Authority, DOT Number, Unified Carrier Registration (UCR), International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) and any other trucking permits you may need.

The time frame for getting this done is about 15 working days from start to finish. Of course you know when working with government agencies problems can appear and delays can occur.
